The Wheel Spins is a sinister tale of deception during the dark times of the war in 1938 which is being brought to the stage in Titchfield.
The adaptation from the novel by Ethel Lina White – which took its plot basis from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film The Lady Vanishes – shows an eclectic group of characters attempting to escape to England when a woman vanishes.
Titchfield Festival Theatre performers tell the deceptively simple plot with a classic premise of a woman meeting a mysterious stranger during a long railway journey.
The story tells of protagonist Iris Carr who suffers a blackout just before boarding a train that is traveling across Europe to London. On board, the still-woozy Iris befriends Mrs Froy, a fellow Englishwoman who is perhaps a bit eccentric but seems to be for the most part agreeable and benign.
Mrs Froy, the ‘vanishing lady’ of Hitchcock’s title, mysteriously disappears while Iris is napping. Her inexplicable departure throws Iris into a mind-bending mystery that will make her alternately question her sanity and the designs of the people around her.
The play runs until Saturday February 23 at St Margarets Arts, St Margarets Lane.
Performances begin at 7.30pm and tickets cost £9 from Monday to Thursday and £11 on Friday and Saturday. Concessions are available.
